I got a note from Bruce Nygaard. He says:
After almost 42 years in the same house, we have purchased a newer home at 916 Fairview Drive in Moscow. Dave Engels
I have sad news.
I received a call from Dave's wife Sue this morning. Dave's 19 year struggle with Parkinson's ended about 10:00am today. Sue, their daughters, son in law and family were with him. She said his passing was peaceful and told me that, in all the years of dealing with this awful illness, Dave never complained or felt sorry for himself.
Sue will let me know more when they have finalized their plans and I'll pass that on to you. |
Saturday, May 29th, 2010
Dave Engels
I talked with Dave's daughter Mary today and the family is gathering with David as his health is failing rapidly. As you probably know, Dave has been living with Parkinson's for many years and in the recent months its progression has taken its toll.
I'm sure our thoughts and prayers would be very much appreciated at this time.
When I know more, I'll pass it along. |

Saturday, February 27th, 2010
I was wandering through The Daily News and found a familiar name among the obituaries.
If you ever came to MHS and were looking for a warm and reassuring face outside of the classroom or, maybe, someone to collect your "parent prepared" absence excuse, you probably remember Agnes Weeks. Mrs. Weeks passed away on February 23, 2010. |
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
I received the following message from Martha Weber Hocutt this afternoon through Bill Moore. Our thoughts are with you Martha.
I have spoke with many of you, but to those of you that I have not touched, I wanted to share that my mother passed away this morning, at 9:25. We are still in the process of organizing arrangments, but the funeral will be held at Shorts Funeral Home in Moscow, ID and the burial will be at the Viola Cemetary. We are thinking that the funeral will be on Monday, but will have more details tomorrow, as that is when we will meet with the funeral home. I am in Lewiston now and was able to be here for Mother's passing. I am with my neice Megan, my brother John, and my son Nick. I am surrounded by friends and family and am doing well, considering the circumstances.
Sincerly

Sunday, September 28th, 2009 - a Window for the 1912 Center in the name of MHS Class of 1964.
I hope everyone has had a safe, sane and enjoyable summer.
At our 45th reunion, many of us toured the old Whitworth building. We were amazed by what has been done in the first phase of this project. There is much left to do as the remaining floors are transformed into great spaces to serve the people of Moscow and the surrounding area. If you missed that part of the reunion, I encourage you to take a tour when you’re in town. If you’d like to watch the slide show of our June 6th tour, you can CLICK HERE or go to the reunion page and find a link titled ‘45th Reunion - The “1912 Center” (Whitworth) Tour’.
First, I want to extend my deepest thanks each of you who has been able to lend a hand. We're getting close but we're not quite at the goal yet.
So far, several classmates, (including me), have provided a total of $1050.00. In these times, that might be pretty good but, I'm hoping I can stir the imagination of a few more classmates and friends in the hope we can get to that $1912.00 figure. I do realize that everyone may not be able to offer much but hope more of the class will be able to contribute at some level.
Originally, we had set a target date of September 1st as the goal for putting together a commitment but.... we've fallen a bit short. I hope it is reasonable to shoot for December 31st . Since the folks working the restoration (Heart of the Arts) has a “501(c)3 / non-profit” tax status, our contributions will be deductible at Tax time.
Our own Jack Porter, a long time Whitworth advocate, has volunteered to act as a focal point for collecting our contributions.
If you would like to join us in this effort, please make checks payable to:
Heart of the Arts, Inc.
Mail them to:

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 - a note from Carole Farley Serebrier.
I got an email from Carole this morning. I know it's not likely that Carole will look to the crowd and find MHS alums waving but... if you find yourself in London on the 4th of October around 7:00pm, you could drop in on a a "Celebrity Recital Series opening event" featuring Carole Farley soprano and
John Constable on piano at London's Cadogan Hall. It would be fun to be there though! |
Sunday, September 14th, 2009 - some news about Mary Rose Weber Tully.
I heard from Mary Rose a few weeks back and she has been ill. I asked if I could share what she told me with the class and she said, "it would be fine to share my information with the class... I think my husband has probably discussed my insides and treatment with half of EPA, so I'm beyond worrying! :)" The news is:
I got sick July 30th and found out August 10th I had pancreatic cancer. Had surgery on the 12th and am home recovering before I start chemo and radiation.
Please keep Mary Rose in your thoughts and prayers. |
Mundy, July 20th, 2009 - an update from Kathy Bockmier Berrigan.
Many thanks to everyone who worked on our 45th reunion. It was great to see all you young people again! What a remarkable class we have!!
Bill and I still run a forestry business in Kettle Falls near beautiful Lake Roosevelt. For fun we have the Chokes & Spokes Car Club, and Bill recently acquired a '37 Buick, which runs! I still enjoy singing with Sweet Adelines and serve on the board of directors of our local historical center, as well as a larger regional network of museums. That keeps us out of trouble most of the time. Our two "kids" (now 39 and 35) are both married to wonderful people, so we have much to be thankful for.
It is always interesting to see the changes in Moscow as it keeps expanding outward into the surrounding fields and possibly into the next state. It almost makes one feel older . . . |
Sunday, July 19th, 2009 - a 7th Grade Picture from John Wilson.
John sent along a 7th grade picture (Ms Durban's class) that we didn't have before. I added the photo to the Memories page and updated the K-8 slideshow on the Reunion page. Thanks John! |
Friday, July 17th, 2009 - an update from Steve Bell.
The reunion was awesome. Once again, thanks to Bill and the committee.
I am so glad I attended. I fear that some who miss, do so because of some old resentment, or fear. Life is about forgiveness.
For example I remain friends, with my ex, Karen, the mother of my awesome son Shane, who is on a mission to Maine this summer with the park service.
I just returned from a two week mission to Tecate, Mexico. I was so impressed with the people, I saw real poverty, and yet I saw such joy and happiness in the midst of all of this. I have friends here who are so whiney, and they have so much and they are so miserable.
I poured concrete with a portable mixer in 95 degree heat, framed, installed sheet rock, did plumbing with a goal to add some 960 churches to rural areas. We had no hot water, showers were an exercise in pain. There was dust everywhere. We would then grab something to eat and take our Christ ministry to the streets of Tecate, where we did bible skits, handed out folders or shirts, and I played my l2 string guitar.
I worked l4 hour days.
At night there were no lights, we only had generators. I saw the milky way in its splendor, it looked like god took a white paintbrush through the sky. And the stars----it was as if I was seeing holes in the floor of heaven. It was a spiritual experience.
No I didn't get swine flu, and no I was in no danger of getting kidnapped (that is confined to larger areas like Tijuana).
I would return there in a heartbeat.

Wenesday, July 8th, 2009 - an update from Bill Sever.
Just thought I'd ask.... Has anyone out there had Hip Replacement surgery? On the 21st of July, I will have that experience on my left hip. After that heals... they'll put one on on the right.... The doctor says.. I could be as much as 1" taller... That should make up for my senior srinkage... Wish me luck! |
Monday, June 30th, 2009 - an update from Bill Sever.
After several years of dealing with declining health, the pain of "old bones" and the ravages of Alzheimer's my Mother passed away yesterday morning. She was 86. My sister, brother and I were at her side. As many of you know, this is one of the saddest and most difficult times in one's life. |

From the last reunion several things have happened. Lost a brother to cancer and found out that I have a leaky heart valve and no plummer to fix it. They are talking about a defibulator but will not be able to make that decision until they get the blood pressure down so trips are limited to a month at a time.
Had a nice conversation with Bill Sever yesterday and forgot to give him my new E mail address.

Thursday, February 12th, 2009 - news from Steve Bell.
I got a newsy update from Steve. Part of it appears below but I placed the whole offering on his page.
I am excited about the 45th reunion. As usual, much has appened. My son, Shane, age 19, is a second year journalism-art student at the University of Montana, Missoula. He has made positive decisions in his life so far. He has avoided some of the wild college years that his dad had. Last summer, he traveled on a church mission to Africa for one month and gave support to AiDS victims.
It occurred to me that I am not getting any younger, particularly when I look into the mirror and see the wrinkles and the gray hair. I expect to see that innocent teen that attended MHS. Life was different then, probably better, there were no cell phones or IPODs. What is an IPOD? We never locked our doors and left our keys in the car (See Steve's page for more detail) |
Friday, February 6th, 2009 - Pat Gayman Bates Update.
Hey Bears!
I just wanted to let you all know that Newsweek now has an article referring to Moscow, Idaho! It's the Feb. 9 edition. The article is about reviving "iconic American clothing"; in other words, clothes that lumberjacks, miners or fishermen wear. The article states, "His (the designer's)..coat is nearly indistinguishable from the coats his fellow Moscow, Idaho residents have on.... but..despite the duds, he is a Harvard-trained researcher...not a grizzled Gem State native on the hunt for a new Winchester." Moscow clothing is now chic!?

I am retiring on January 29th, 2009. I am very excited and my husband, Bob, and I are heading south to get out of Montana cold winters. We plan to take our time visiting family and friends along the way. Our final destination is Houston, Texas, where our daughter and family live.

Friday, December 15th, 2008 - "Coach" dies.
Looking back... to the 60s, there were several teachers that tried to guide my wondering sense of self and lack of appreciation for my classes. One was Chuck Sutton.
I got the following from the Daily News.
Charles Lester Sutton died Dec. 13 at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene. He was 80. CLICK HERE for his Obituary.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Moscow. Online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net. |

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 - A contact from Dave Engles.
This is Sue writing for Dave. We are thrilled that there really is going to be a 45th reunion. And we are going to try to be there. Dave doesn't travel too well these days. We are going to Albuquerque to be with his mother and stepfather for Christmas, but only because our daughter Mary is going to fly out to Portland from Massachusetts and help me take Dave on the plane. A driving trip to Moscow will probably still be possible for the two of us without additional help. The June 5-7 dates work well.
There have been lots of changes. I moved to Canby in August, 2007 to be closer to the assisted living center where Dave stays. The house in Woodburn was on the market for 15 months. It finally sold, closing last week. I started back to work full-time in May as the finance director of the City of Canby. My office is a three minute walk from where I live. Getting a job and selling the house have certainly eased the finances.
My place is a three minute drive from where Dave lives. Living and working in Canby allows me to spend more time with him. He needs a lot of help these days. He's no longer able to use a computer, but I check his email everyday for him and print off anything he'd want to see. He still reads and he loves to get email and snail mail. He isn't able to talk on the phone very well, so I wouldn't suggest trying to call him. We have wonderful friends who go out of their way to spend time with Dave. They have watched the progression of his Parkinson' Disease-- over more than 17 years now--and have been there for us the whole time.
We have been blessed in other ways as well. Our daughters have always been a joy. Now our daughter Jenny and her husband Doug are going to make us grandparents in April! I'm trying to control myself, but do you know that they make darling bathing suits in size 3 mos? Jenny and Doug live in Honolulu, so the baby probably won't be wearing a lot of knitted things.
I hope everyone comes to the 45th reunion. Times passes so quickly. It's important to see people when you have the opportunity.

This picture shows what our daughter Mary was doing just before she moved to Massachusetts. She got the opportunity to spend six weeks in Antarctica in January & February, 2007, doing research funded by NSF and administered through Scripps College. I use this picture as my screen saver now.

Friday, September 12th, 2008 - A contact from Steve Bell.
Steve's out of Sacred Heart and now recovering at Ivy Court, a rehab facility, in Coeur d'Alene. He expects to be there for a week or two.
Life is really hard there... today he went on a lake cruise.
I'm thinking he's on the road to recovery.

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 - A contact from Steve Bell.
So much for double by-pass surgery. They ended up doing four.
I called and talked with Steve this afternoon. He seems in good spirits but... the nurse is coming in later to have him sit up... and start moving around.
It didn't sound like he was looking forward to the experience but he did say that, due to some really great meds, he feels pretty good. |
Sunday, August 31st, 2008 - A contact from Steve Bell.
This week I went in for some tests on my heart. On Tuesday, September 2nd at 5:00am, I will be in Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane for by-pass surgery. The tests found one artery with nearly 100% blockage and another with 80%.
No wonder I had trouble climbing a hill on my last outing with son Shane. |
Sunday, July 13th, 2008 - A contact from Steve Bell.
Some of you may know that Steve has been out-of-touch for, a bit over, a year now. He's been batteling some health issues but tells me he's doing much better and living in Winchester Idaho.
Steve gave me an updated Email address (it's on his page) and
will pass on some more info as time permits.

Monday, June 30th, 2008 - A Question from Phil Crossler.
It's probably a very good time to start thinking in ernest about the 45th reunion we voted on at the last gathering. Phil and Kathy have a suggestion and maybe other's would like to weigh in. Kathy and I are open to any time next year as long as we know before the first of the year. We are still working and need to make arrangements for the time off.
Carl's suggestion of the last weekend in June is great by us.
We are still in Everett and today is the start of "Grandparents Camp" and we have our 4 oldest grand kids for a week. We are so looking forward to the week. The mind may be willing but the old flesh may need a second week to recover.
It is good to hear from classmates, this next year's get together will be extra fun.
Thanks
Phil and Kathy Crossler

Friday, June 20th, 2008 - An update from George Wendt.
Well, a year after the reunion, I retired from Tacoma Power.
Couldn't wait to move to someplace warm.
Found a job with US Bureau of Reclamation as a Mechanical Engineer at Hoover Dam. I'm finally back working on Hydro Electric Equipment - designing/overhauling and solving problems. It is a lot more fun when you can tell the boss --- "I'm here because I want to be - not because I have to be!!!"
At any rate, the work is fun and we are doing new inovative things because of the prolonged drought -- upgrading the original equipment from the 1930's. Also, I'M WORKING AT HOOVER DAM!!! I HAVE DRAWINGS WITH MY NAME ON THEM!! Can you tell I like it.
I live 8 miles from Hoover in Boulder City, NV -- it is a great little town. I love the hot/warm weather -- as I write this it is 10PM and the temp outside is a cool 90-degrees at 6% humidity with a slight breeze and the doors and windows are open -- you don't know what you're missing. Plus, Vegas is 15 minutes from my house.
I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone next year and hope that if you're down this way and want a personal tour of Hoover Dam that you contact me -- "I know someone whoe works there!!"
I travel up to the northwest regularly and miss the green (not a lot) and my daughter, but, hard to beat Lake Mead, Lake Havasau, sunshine, warm and the Vegas shows.
I hope this finds you all happy and in good health --
Thanks Bill for all your efforts and Great Job on this site -- I wish some of the other classes would use this site as a "benchmatk"
