James L. Howerton, 57, Moscow

James L. (Jim) Howerton, 57, of Moscow, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

Jim was born May 27, 1946, in Moscow to Ray and Margaret Vickrey Howerton. He grew up and attended Moscow schools and graduated from Moscow High School in 1964. Jim attended the University of Idaho and graduated in 1971 with his bachelor's degree. While attending the university, Jim was a member of the grounds maintenance crew.

He married Lynn Standley in August 1969 and they were later divorced.

In 1970, Jim went to work at Idaho Beverages of Lewiston where he stayed for more than 30 years. He was in charge of vending machines at the UI campus.

Jim married Debbie Martson May 19, 1978, in Coeur d'Alene.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening and camping. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time supporting his granddaughters' soccer games. Jim was an avid sports fan and was a devoted supporter of Vandal athletics. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge and the Moscow Eagles. Jim was a social and outgoing person, and the best husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie of Moscow; his daughters, Kelly Garcia and Molly Howerton, both of Moscow, and Shana Howerton of Seattle; two granddaughters, Chelsea and Samantha Howerton of Moscow; a sister, Karrylle Curnes of Moscow; and one uncle, Percy Vickrey of Lewiston.

His parents preceded him in death.

The memorial service is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow with Pastor Roger Lynn of the United Church of Moscow officiating. Cremation will take place prior to the service.

Memorials are suggested to a favorite charity.
